The Story of Girls from the Center: How Sewing Builds Confidence and New Hope
The story of this project is about small steps that lead to big changes. At the Diagnostic Center on Slovinská Street in Bratislava, a space was created over the course of three months where girls could try something new – to create, to learn, and to believe in themselves.
It all started with the initiative of fashion designer Janka Jurčenko, who runs her own Fashion Academy. While she عادة offers it commercially, she decided to connect it with the non-profit organization LIPPA and bring it to girls from the Bratislava Diagnostic Center. Together, they created a project where the girls learned handicrafts and sewing – skills they can use in the future. An important role was also played by educators Zuzka Majeková and Janko Kožuško, who genuinely care about the children.
From Uncertainty to Joy
Five girls attended the first course. At the beginning, they felt unsure and didn’t know what to expect. Gradually, however, the atmosphere began to change.
“The girls always looked forward to each session because the atmosphere was so welcoming. They spoke openly without hesitation, forgot about their everyday worries from school or home, and were able to think about something completely different. They could be themselves and felt very comfortable,” explains educator Zuzka.
With each session, their confidence, openness, and joy in spending time together grew.
From First Stitches to Their Own Dresses
The course took place once a week and lasted two hours. Under the guidance of Janka Jurčenko, the girls learned patience, focus, and the basics of sewing. The results included handmade summer dresses, scarves, and hair scrunchies.
“I have to say, the girls are very, very talented. I am pleasantly surprised. They are truly skilled, and their positive interest amazed me. Most of all, they are excited that the result will be beautiful summer dresses,” says Janka. “I believe this activity will also be helpful for them in life.”
Why Sewing Matters
“Fashion Academy” was not just about clothing. It brought the girls:
Confidence: they began to believe in their abilities
Meaningful time: they learned how to use their free time productively and grow
Self-discipline: they developed focus and patience through their work
“Children in the Diagnostic Center come with behavioral challenges. Courses like the ones provided by LIPPA help them use their free time in a meaningful way. This reduces risky behavior when they return home because they learn self-discipline,” explains Zuzka.
Holding on to New Beginnings
Although only three girls completed the course, their joy was immense. As a reward, they received sewing machines signed by Janka Jurčenko – a symbol of trust and support for their future.
The project does not end here. The center plans to continue in the future. The girls are not only taking away new skills, but also the feeling that they are capable of more than they ever thought.
And that is where its greatest impact lies.
